Dear Friends, Delegates, dear Chairs, dear Supporters, dear Guests, dear Reader,
welcome to Hamburg Model United Nations 2015!
It has been a long journey for us Secretaries-General and for our team since we decided to take on the responsibility of organizing this newest edition of HamMUN and we are all delighted to finally be able to welcome everyone to our conference!
This year we took inspiration from the 70th anniversary celebrations of the United Nations itself. Ban Ki-Moon emphasized himself in a statement earlier this year that this anniversary was a good moment to reflect on the many years of work, impact and change this institution has been through. So as we started brainstorming what we wanted this year’s HamMUN to embody, we took a closer look at the development ourselves. All of us Secretaries-General - being avid MUNers for years - wanted this year’s conference to reflect the true nature of what the United Nations stands for. We saw in the development the founding of many sibling institutions and supporting bodies that are all interwoven in the work of the UN today, but are sometimes downplayed in their significance. This we wanted to do differently and so the decision was made to build HamMUN 2015 to mirror the true diversity in committees, bodies, voices and perspectives we see as vital parts of the United Nations system.
The organizing team - beginning with us Secretaries-General - also come from very different backgrounds and have brought our own touches to this conference. We have the classic political scientist, law students and economist, but also students studying psychology, history, cultural/regional studies, computer science, management and education. We have already lost track of how many languages and backgrounds can be found within this group of individuals, but what we do know is how hard everyone has worked to make this conference possible. Many long nights, skype conference calls and coffee-runs will be forever part of this experience and we are very proud to now share the result with every one of you.
So let us welcome you again to this beautiful city and to our conference and we hope to meet as many of you throughout the debates and socials!
